At the final OpenMike of 2017, Chance the Rapper donated 300 pairs of Jordan’s to its attendees.

In the spirit of the holiday season, Chance the Rapper recently donated shoes to attendees of the last OpenMike session of 2017. When Chance announced the giveaway of the shoes, the entire auditorium of students went wild.

With help from Nike, Chance was able to give each of the attendees a pair of Jordan Retro 11s, which would not be released until days later. Students who were unable to attend the month’s OpenMike could pick up their free Jordan’s at 32 South State Street with an ID.

OpenMike is a monthly opportunity for high school students to share, express, and network with like-minded individuals. This recurring event began to honor Chance’s late mentor “Brother Mike” Hawkins who inspired many young people to pursue their artistic passions.

Housed in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium of Harold Washington Library, OpenMike honors Brother Mike’s vision by teaching students showmanship, connecting young artists to each other, and inspiring creativity among Chicago’s youth. Every month, students are able to share their music, poetry, and art with each other, and Chance makes frequent appearances to interact with and encourage their students in their art.

On Twitter, Chance was able to express his gratitude about the event and said this particular OpenMike was “one of its best nights yet.”
